Digital Signal Processing (DSP)

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): This is a blanket term that applies to any alteration of digital data. Analog signal processing has been around for decades in hundreds of applications, but the advent of the digital age has allowed a computer to do far more with signal processing due to the discrete nature of digital data. DSP exists as a method of measuring and changing real world analog data and so must undergo an analog to digital process as well as a digital to analog one at the end of processing. This is a time consuming process, but digital signal processing allows for far greater control as well as safety than does analog. [ Audio Glossary ]
